How to make 3D animation
By: Sky Stone Studios
The 3D animation process involves a number of stages that looks like filmmaking in its early and later stages
Stages of 3D Animation
Concept
Storyboarding
3D Modeling
Texturing
Rigging & skinning
Animation
Rendering
Compositing & VFX
Music & Foley
Editing

Concept
This is the idea or storyline of an animation. All companies such as Pixar spend more than a year getting the scripts right before any work is done.

Storyboarding
This is also known as the prep visuals And somehow related to concept. Each scene is sketched out showing character action, shot angles, sequence of action and cinematic direction. It is an important process for easy animation process

3D Modeling
Modelling is the creating of 3D objects and characters via mathematical representation of all it's elements shapes such as cubes, spheres or planes are created using vertices, edge, and face. These points are mapped onto a 3D grid and rendered into 3-dimmensional objects.

Texturing
Once the 3D object is done it undergoes texturing, where the outer layer is finished. This can be a skin, clothing or hair for characters, a metal finish for a car or machine; brickwork for a house or building, fur far animals etc.
Rigging and skinning
Rigging is the construction of muscular skeletal basis of your animation.
Character rigs allow the joints and moving parts of the object that will allow it to move in a believable wat.
Skinning is the smoothing of the joints, think of this as providing the skin which covers the mechanics underneath the object.

Animation
Now that you have built your 3D character or object from scratch you can animate them through a sequence of movements or though a scene. This is where the full storyboard is animated to realize the script.
Rendering
This is the process of generating the 3D animation via a graphics processing unit (GPU). This is done by inputting the render equation into the software which outputs a complete animated sequence. Here shading, texture mapping, shadows, reflections motion blur, etc are formulated into the sequence.
Composting & VFX
Multiple render passes will need to be combined to produce the final animation, this is composting. It is a process of refining elements such as lighting, shading, colour, etc which involves adding layers to a single image or series of images.
